Reviews 10/25/07
Welcome to my first Hit and Miss week for the latest comics.
First up, the hits:
Teen Titans #52
The Junior Justice league continues to deal with their dark future
counterparts. I really am enjoying this title and it seems to be finding its own
unique flavor more and more with each issue. Time travel and dimension
hopping stories have a particular warm place in my heart. The art is very
good, dynamic and only enhances the text. The only question it raises for
me is how old is Robin supposed to be now? Judging by the art, I'd place
him around seventeen.
About the unique flavor, I think getting rid of Kid Flash only helped as it cut
the whole old team/new team parallels even more. Teen Titans #52 3/5
stars
She Hulk #22
I'm an old school She Hulk fan from back during her Avenger days,
bantering with Hawkeye and Jennifer being the meek alter ego. I enjoyed the
Byrne series but I really enjoyed Slott's series. This issue was approached
with much trepidation and expectation. I'm a ridiculously huge Peter David
fan and I don't think anybody has a grip on the Hulk like he does.
Well...
This issue is a fresh start for the character, taking her away from the law firm
and setting up lots of things as well as the big twist at the end of the issue.
I'm intrigued to see where this is going but I'm more lost than anything right
now.
I do like that PAD isn't ignoring the continuity of the series to this point and is
incorporating it in. The art is, well, its a different matter and it might take
some getting used to for me. She Hulk #22 3/5 stars
Quick reviews:
Flash #232 This one I'm still not sure where its going. While I'm happy to
have Wally back I still really don't get this book. The art is very interesting
though and I'm going to keep this one for now. Positive
Countdown Bleah. Bad art, uninteresting story, this one has dropped to a
flip in the store title. Negative
Moon Knight #13 I really dig this title in the train wreck you can't look away
from style. I do like 'hero with the psychiatrist' issues and this one was no
exception. I don't know where this is going but I'm loving the ride. Positive
Thunderbolts #117 I'll be honest, the first few issues of this relaunch left me
cold. I thought it was ugly and bleah and uninteresting. I'm glad I stuck it out.
Its really becoming interesting and, surprisingly, fun. Remember what I said
about Moon Knight and psychiatrist issues? Well Doc Samson guests in
this issue and analyzes Penance. Very very cool. The subplots move ahead
and keep me interested. very Positive
And, to finish up, the book I was really looking forward to:
Velocity Pilot Season #1 Any book with Kevin Macguire and his wonderful
expressions gets my dollar. The story itself establishes the character then
settles in for a rollicking good time. Its like a rollercoaster ride and, like such
a ride, it seems like its over much too soon. I know Kev probably can't do the
art on a monthly book at this time. That said, I still went and voted for this
series to get a shot.
It is the most classic superhero book I've ever seen from Top Cow. That's
the highest praise I can give it. Ridiculously positive.
